Terms of Use
Version 2026-10-30 · Effective 30 October 2026
In short:
- PowaOn shows estimates worked out from phones charging. It is not from NEPA, any DisCo or TCN, and it can be wrong, late or missing.
- Never treat "no light" on PowaOn as proof that wiring is safe to touch.
- Use it fairly: no fake charger events, no attacks on the service, no misuse of the bots.
- It is free and provided as it is. You can stop and delete your data at any time.
1. About these terms
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Eyinsan Odugba ("we", "us"), who run PowaOn: the Android app, the live map website, and the PowaOn Telegram and WhatsApp bots (together, "PowaOn"). By tapping Agree and continue in the app, or by using the website or bots, you agree to these terms and confirm you have read our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use PowaOn.
2. What PowaOn is
PowaOn estimates whether areas have mains electricity. Phones running the app report when they start or stop charging from the wall; when many phones in one area change together, PowaOn infers that the power changed and tells people who follow that area. Information such as "usually back in about 2 hours", weekly reports and the Light league is calculated from past patterns. All of it is a crowd-sourced estimate, not an official or measured record.
3. Who may use PowaOn
You must be at least 18 years old, or have the permission of a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms for you. If you use PowaOn for an organisation, you confirm you may accept these terms for it.
4. Your licence
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use PowaOn for your own non-commercial purposes. We license PowaOn to you; we do not sell it. All rights we do not expressly give you stay with us and our licensors.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- send false or simulated charger events, run the app on emulators or scripts to fake sensors, or register many installs to influence an area;
- interfere with, overload, probe or attack PowaOn, or get around its limits or security;
- collect data from PowaOn in bulk by automated means, or resell it, without our written permission;
- copy, modify or reverse-engineer the app except where the law allows it despite this clause;
- use the bots to send spam, abuse, or messages that are not about PowaOn;
- use PowaOn to break any law, or to harm anyone.
We may limit, suspend or remove access, and ignore data, where we reasonably believe these rules are being broken.
6. Your phone, your data costs
The app runs in the background to hear your charger. It uses a little battery and mobile data (a few hundred bytes for each update). Charges from your mobile network, including for data and messages, are yours. Keep the app updated so it works and stays secure.
7. What you share with us
You keep any rights in information you send us. You allow us to use your charger events, area, alert choices and answers (such as "grid or generator?") to run and improve PowaOn, and to publish them only in combined form that does not identify you, such as area power states, maps and statistics. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly what we collect and your rights.
8. Alerts and messaging services
Alerts may arrive late, more than once, or not at all, for example when there are too few sensors, the network is down, or a messaging service fails. Telegram, WhatsApp (Meta) and Google deliver messages under their own terms, which also apply to you when you use them. We do not send alerts that cost you money without your separate agreement.
9. Safety
- PowaOn is not an official source and is not connected to NEPA, TCN, any distribution company (DisCo), NERC or any government.
- Always assume wires and sockets are live. Never repair, connect or touch electrical installations because PowaOn says there is no light. Use a qualified electrician.
- Do not rely on PowaOn for medical equipment, life support, security systems or any situation where wrong or missing information could cause harm.
- Run generators outdoors, away from windows and doors, to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
10. Maps and third-party content
Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence; map tiles by OpenFreeMap; maps drawn with MapLibre. Links to other services are provided for convenience; we are not responsible for them.
11. Changes to PowaOn
PowaOn is free. We may change, pause or stop any part of it, and we will try to give notice of major changes in the app or bots.
12. No warranty
PowaOn is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will be accurate, complete, timely, uninterrupted, secure or error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.
13. Limits on our liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of profit, data, food, equipment, business or opportunity arising from PowaOn or from relying on it. Our total liability for all claims about PowaOn is limited to ₦50,000.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot legally be limited, and nothing affects your rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 or other consumer laws that cannot be excluded.
14. Ending
You may stop using PowaOn at any time. Delete your data in the app (Privacy & legal → Delete my data), send /stop to the Telegram bot or STOP to the WhatsApp bot; see Delete your data. We may end your access under section 5. Sections 7, 9, 12, 13, 16 and 17 continue after these terms end.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version and date above will change. For a material change we give at least 14 days' notice before it takes effect, on this website and in the Telegram and WhatsApp bots; the app will ask you to agree to the new terms before you continue. Changes that only add protections for you, or that a law requires, may take effect straight away.
16. Disputes and governing law
If you have a problem, please contact us first at [email protected] and give us 30 days to try to resolve it. These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The courts of Lagos State, Nigeria, have jurisdiction, without taking away any right you have to bring a claim where you live or before a consumer or data protection authority.
17. General
If any part of these terms is found invalid, the rest stays in force. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we do not give it up. You may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours to someone who takes over PowaOn and agrees to respect them. These terms, with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement about PowaOn. If a translation differs, the English version applies.
